It makes me sad how "NPC" has been turned into this type of pejorative. I really loved Dan the Bard's take on the concept as a relative term. His notion was that an NPC is someone not engaged in your storyline. But that applied to *everyone*. So 1/3

Even the language conspiracy theorists use is a tell. Everyone who’s not hep to the Dark Truth is an “NPC,” whereas they, of course, are the protagonists, once they get to their computers after finishing inventory at the shop or putting the kids to bed.
