I hate AI so much. But taking away accommodations from disabled students isn’t the way.

(Also, it’s 2025, the world is horrifically eugenicist, if you have to ask why students might be hesitant to ask for official accommodations, you’re part of the problem.)

I just find it interesting that rather than build a relationship with their students where they feel comfortable using their own words, lots of lecturers are forcing them. Because that doesn’t build counterproductive resentment at all.

I "can" handwrite, but it's really painful. Jotting down a note or two, sure, but actual note taking or essay writing needs a keyboard.

So far I am not personally having a problem (we’ll see come fall). I have just seen an AWFUL lot of lecturers pretending they’ve cracked the code to ensuring no AI.

Over the past year, upwards of 90% of my students were using AI. But I could not prove it nor would my university back me up if I were to try and push back. It stinks that accommodations are needed but I've yet to find another workable solution.

Nothing is going to change as long as the strategy is punitive. Punishment ALWAYS hurts the most marginalized more. Always.

I'm one of those professors. But do let students know they can get accommodations, that I would need to myself. This solution is not cracking the code, but if students do use AI handwriting the answers will at least get them to learn something. Copy and paste means nothing is learned.

It always takes me so long to hand write (side effect of apraxia) that I got vey used to advocating for myself as well. One reason that laptops are always allowed in my classes.
