Currently really liking the Silent Hill 2 remake, and I know this is a very small gripe, but I really hate when Twin Peaks references are shoehorned into stuff in clumsy and obvious ways.

Yeah! Like in Alan Wake 2 it’s very much still there but I’m more okay with it because they at least had their own visual language. There’s a few shots that are very Lynch but are done in a way that I was more accepting. Still, I don’t think it’s good practice to lean on his style at all really.
This was in Heaven’s Night which was the best part of the game so far, but when I saw that while exploring every nook of the room it sort of cheapened the whole thing for me.
Like I know that the bar/club is supposed to be a Lynch reference itself, but putting a sticker on the wall winking to me saying “See? Do you get it? This is just like Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks!” is so goofy in a bad way.
It’s weird lol like I wish it wasn’t done at all, but if it has to be done then it at least shouldn’t be hyper overt to the point of being fourth wall breaking
It is unfortunately a game full of things like that that annoy me. The safe code at the motel is the meme code from Looking Glass Studios games. The movie theater has posters referencing An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge and (I think) Vanilla Sky.
And of course there's all the self-referential stuff that I guess is fine, but it feels like they made it assuming everyone who plays it will have played the original and they wanna go "hey remember THIS" to you over and over. I feel like it's a bad way to experience the story for the first time.
The self referential stuff has bothered me a little too. Some of it works in how Maria almost kind of talks through James to us, but I hard agree that as a remake it kind of fails in recreating the experience of the original as far as story elements like that are concerned.
I’ve honestly thought about it lol and I do get it, at this point it’s almost like a modern Dracula that spawned a base point for horror style. I do wonder if it would annoy me so bad if it was much older like Dracula is.
