Themes get discovered and fleshed out between drafts 3 and 10. In your scenes, the emotional shift is a growth, and the growth, metaphors, characterization, foreshadowing. All those fun bits you instinctually put in earlier draft are tweaked to form cohesive evidence for the theme.

maybe elaborate more on why u feel like u have no idea what its about?

But also pay attention to character. Knowing ur characters 100%: motivations personality backstory values strengths weakness etc. helps

I'm writing a story that is supposed to be about a guy becoming a father. So a middle aged dude in a dystopian world finds a child of his friend and adopts it, yet, somehow, if you take the child out of the story nothing much changes 🤷‍♀️. Ig that I gotta work on the relationships of MC and a kid...

in that case you def need to focus more on who the characters are, their relationships & how they affect one another.

Who is the guy before/after meeting the child and vice versa?

persnly I find music helps a lot with inspiration. like put on some music u might associate with each character/scene
