Absolutely AMAZING. Soooooo cool! Thank you for pointing out the buildings that survived. I used to work in the Spreckels Building! No restrooms for women! And a shaving wash sink in every office ;) Because "of course"? ;)

Here's a trye story for you. Andy Wallace, my grandfather, and his brother were dentists. Their office was on the corner of Union Square.

There was gold in the office for tooth fillings. Under shoot to kill orders, they crept and negotiated their way back up to their office to rescue that gold!

I know my great grandfather and his brother had their shoe repair burned out on Market Street, 3 of my 4 grandparents were here for 1906.. I always kick myself for never asking my grandmother about it. I think they decamped to Oakland for a while

I found a terrific little book years ago and I kept it. Something about the story of Heath Angelo. It's a fictitious account of a kid from Oakland who goes on the ferry with his father to seek work in the destroyed city across the bay. It's really lovely.
