It is indeed... hopefully it won't be The Hunger Games or an intellectual property nightmare. Multiple people working on the same theme under the same boss.... would love to hear from people who have been researchers on humanities ERC projects how, or to what extent, that happens.

It's a different model of research production than we have historically seen in the Humanities for sure, but it's totally normal for social science & especially STEM people. I think there's a lot of potential for us in doing more collaborative work. If this is the future, I think we can adjust:-).

I know it's normal in other fields, but generative connections in the humanities are broader & benefit from intellectual independence. One brain deciding what multiple minions do fails visionaries - and it doesn't support deeply qualitative work that can't be shoe-horned into a GANTT chart.

I mean, a general theme with an open call for people to put forward their own phd or postdoc projects that connect to it would work a lot better than the minionification method.

I am not sure bc we haven't tried this approach much. The one comparison that comes to my mind is Maria Ågren's similarly well funded big team for her Gender & Work in Sweden project which produced all kinds of important work for the whole & individuals - highly successful.

It's a very well established model for funding the humanities in the EU, and has been for, I don't know, 20 years? Certainly well over a decade; I noticed it in the aughts and it was old then.
