There's a lot of catching up to do, and who knows what we can expect her to learn in school at this point, even in NY. Yesterday she came home and told me that she saw someone in her book today but she couldn't remember his name so she said

"that guy in all the old pictures that made black and white people ok with each other". I told her black and white people are absolutely not ok with each other but i pulled up MLK's picture and she said "Yeah him!" Then i looked up "MLK color photos" and she was blown away they existed.
I explained to her that it's done on purpose, to make it seem like it was a lot longer ago than it was and that her Grandmas were alive at the same time, color photos absolutely exist, and that it wasn't that long ago. She couldn't believe it.
She asked a bunch more questions and we went off on all sorts of tangents, at one point with me explaining the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and showing her sketches of what slave ships looked like. She took in every word i said, and kept asking questions.
She asked if one of her friends was black (he is absolutely a pasty white boy) and she expressed concern for two of her friends that are black. We talked about racism being very much alive today and that we don't judge or hate anyone. We have a long way to go, but i'm looking forward to our talks.
