I think it's safe to say 'woke' was coined by the legendary vocalist Erika Badu in a song — to me, it's offensive for people to use it in a pejorative way. The whole 'virus' thing is just an extension of that. Why not say 'awakened' like the dictionary instructs? Who's afraid of people not sleeping?
