Nobody really knows why they do it. In nature, they will bring mice to teach kittens how to hunt, or, when living in a loose cat clowder, to demonstrate acceptance or sometimes even to take care of the sick and elderly. Sometimes they just have the urge to take their prey to the safety of the home.
Cats have a strange relationship with us. They might simultaneously regard us as group members, kittens and parents. So the individual motivation to bring us prey might even differ. Whether it is a feeling that it is their job to contribute to the food supply, they think we are too dumb to hunt or
want to show us that we are part of their accepted group - it‘s all speculation in the end, even though newspaper articles will forever claim that [insert random scientific group] has found THE reason.
And they probably domesticated themselves by staying near the mice around humans, and liking a bed to sleep in, some snuggles and additional food. perhaps they hope to trade mice for treats as well?
