Think you need the game for the context (and Saints’ whole season). Playing out from the back only works if you do it well and judiciously. Southampton do neither and concede tons of goals by giving the opposition the ball in their own area.

A lot of clubs want to have an ideology more than anything, Russell Martin didn’t do particularly well at Swansea but got the Saints job purely for his playstyle. Same thing happened with Kompany. It’s silly, promoted clubs should always prioritise results, to begin with at least.

Playing out from the back is what causes the initial pressure but the last Soton defender is not even trying to play. He attempts to launch it and manages to get it 10 yards all on the floor.

Completely agree. They seem to try and play out every single time regardless of the situation. Being good at playing out at the back means recognising the right time to do it, not just doing it for the sake of it. They won’t win many games if they don’t become more flexible.

They are actually good passing in the midfield. Boot the ball to Onuachu and compete in the midfield. They also have decent runners.
