#NWSL NEWS: Gotham has signed Brazilian forward Gabi Portilho through 2026 (option for 2027). A significant detail: It was a free transfer from Corinthians, which keeps allocation money in hand and doesn't ding the transfer threshold.

Without a draft, they will inject more money into elite players, but they have limits on the amount they can spend on each club, I don't know if it's like that in the WSL.

It does seem to me that some kind of tournament between the best sides in Europe and the best in the NWSL might be interesting. Certainly more of a case for it in women's football than mens.

Probably good reasons for it not to happen, mostly calendar based

What’s interesting too is that the numbers appear higher but the cost of living is higher too (everything is adjusted up). So it feels like you’re making more money in comparison but it goes less far. And now that you don’t get housing (but maybe extra pay based on location? Not sure), it’ll add up.

I wouldn’t exactly say cost of living in the UK is a whole lot better. Things definitely vary by market in the US though

When I was there last USA was much higher for food etc. energy is cheaper - renting in some areas is much higher then uk average (New York/san Fran etc).

Again, it appears like it is more expensive because the numbers are different. So to a visitor, it’ll look like they’re paying more for food, etc. But locals are earning more in comparison, but they also spend more bc numbers are higher. Percentage wise of your income, you end up spending (cntd)

I know locals are earning more - when comparing costs being higher when we can compare salaries directly. My company as an example pays an uplift when people go to the USA due to the higher cost of living.

So if you look at only the numbers, it’ll look like someone in the US is earning more. But they’re also spending more bc the numbers (not just cost of living) are higher. They could be (and usually are) spending a similar percentage of their (cntd)

This is exactly the point - if you are offered the same salary to play in say New York as Manchester you need to take home a lot more in New York to cover rent, bills, family costs.

Put it this way: player A makes $125k in the US when they’d make maybe £65k in the UK. They’d look at that and think, ‘wow, I can make lots more money in the US, salaries are higher, I should move there!’ But what they’re not factoring in is that a grocery bill may have been £65 in (cntd)

No, just less in terms of numbers and incidentals like health insurance/copays, etc. But just pure numbers wise, it can seem to a European player that they’re making more cos they’re making higher numbers but it’s not as much as they think because everything else is also higher numbers wise.

But you also have state and property taxes which we don’t have in the same way the U.K. does and costs in big cities for rents are higher - even then London.

I’d also point out that player’s access to healthcare is waaaay different than the average American. Clubs are required to offer significant healthcare resources as part of the CBA, which would require the copays that person is talking about. (Our healthcare still sucks!)

Tax varies by state but much lower than 40% on a salary of $65k. Some states even have no income tax (though still federal income tax).
