I think this is absolutely correct too. Use VAR to help the ref, overturn it and absolutely nobody has any issues. Totally understandable Oliver might have seen it as a more dangerous tackle than it was. But the tools are used to justify and deflect, it’s all about image.

I think people could do with cooling down a bit, but also, it is just a refereeing decision. If the people in the game (and I include PGMOL in this) stopped treating every mistake like the end of the world, so would everyone else.

But the anger would have simmered very quickly and just be of greater concern again when he's next due to officiate us.
The audio for this incident would be very welcome. Was there even a discussion?
Football doesn't have this culture. As much as a minority of fans must account for their unacceptable actions, the game must examine itself.
On occasion we discuss the standards and differences in officiating between both sports - the conversations are interesting.
I'm a believer that we can learn from multiple sports. Arrogance holds everyone back.
It's not about taking everything from one sport and putting it into football but I certainly think there are plenty of learnings to be had.
My ascertion though is the refereeing standard and etiquette between players, referees, teams and the union bodies is far superior in that sport to what gets displayed in PL football, imo.
Everyone talks about rugby players being more respectful but it works both ways, the respect the refs have is clear as well, and they are clear with their actions. In my limited experience of watching anyway.
I'm all for the same in football. Make it transparent
I don’t buy the conspiracy stuff, I don’t think they’d be competent enough to organise one 😂
As was discussed with the plane crash stuff Saturday, hierarchy culture often leads to poor decisions & sometimes (relatively) disastrous outcomes.
To give anything else you have to be looking for an excuse to do it.
Whilst more fun, the Carabao games and early FA Cup games have had so many incidents of snide fouls away from the refs eyeline, and players diving for pens.
It would be a free for all. VAR (sadly) needs to remain.
Can even believe he temp lost his head & after thought “shit, how am I going to justify this?” so can argue an error but I don’t believe he gives that red card against any other team.
This referee has been involved in 3 weird situations involving Arsenal, all within the space of a year. Normal to focus on that.
The culture is wrong, the structure is wrong & their attitude is wrong. They’re organisationally poor & any kind of fair selection process is clearly non existent looking at the demographics.
They’re simply not fit for purpose.
- Ref announces his call,
- Asks the replay to check for certain things,
- Replay checks items in question,
- Crowd groans (or cheers),
- Amended decision given or original confirmed
It’s all transparent and it works
Also, PL Rugby even has a former player as a ref and get this…THEY EVEN LET HIM OFFICIATE HIS FORMER TEAM’s MATCHES!! 😳
Cricket has them talk over the decision on the live coverage, and explain the logic. Can we not have their live comments? If the broadcaster has the film, surely they can get the simple radio comments back?
They state what they see on the call and ask for VAR clarification on certain aspects of the laws. I believe it’s also showed on the Jumbotron.
Side note - hearing Joe Marler in the background on matches is hilarious! 😆
In my view this decision could not fit in the latter given it wasn’t clear.
The statistical skewedness of Michael Oliver's decisions against Arsenal is beyond incidental.
Howard Webb must be accountable for allowing it.
