I have a whole folder of bookmarks to articles debunking the Ellis Island name change myth, which grows every time someone brings it up. And I suspect I'm not the only one.

My surname change happened (several times, actually) in Ireland before immigration, but people always ask about Ellis Island when I mention it’s a messed-up Irish name.
If I were ruler of the genealogy universe, I would build a simulation of arriving in America or Canada where people could walk through buying a ticket and then experience getting processed at the arrival port, just so they could see how it worked.
