My guess is that his mother's side was trying to pass as White Italian, but the records show otherwise.

Though I imagine that if he leaned into it, he'd get a lot of people complaining that he was doing a variation of "one-drop rule" and/or "ethnic stolen valor".

Yes. That was one of the issues with the Elizabeth Warren stuff - even if she had the Amerindian ancestry she wasn't experiencing the racism and oppression (I certainly have some Black ancestry, but obviously, cops are very nice to me).

Makes one wonder the utility of worrying at all about classifying people into racist categories like "white" or "black," doesn't it? (Except possibly to help identify people victimized by racists.) The man has some old idiosyncratic mix of genetic ancestry and cultural heritage, as do we all.

No. Black people have been in the Americas for 400-500 years. So Almost all African Americans show some or significant amounts of English or European ancestry in genetic tests. However, this does not change their racial identity, nor does the converse apply.
