I guess the question is are these papers now read by so few people that it doesn't matter? Would help if the BBC stopped joining in (also discussed in the book).

These papers are read by knuckle dragging Brexit racists which, according to the latest poll, are almost exclusively sourced from the 25% Reform and 22% Conservative voters!
During the New Labour years I remember ministers would quit because they were ‘a distraction’, ie hadn’t necessarily done anything wrong but dealing with it meant they couldn’t do the job. Get the idea it’s easier to ride it out these days.
The Conservatives and their supporting rags were well aware, so creating a distraction centred on anyone they feel threatened by to try and force them out has become standard practice.
Their readership still "matters" in that it still attracts a sizeable section of society, but it's diminishing. Good ridden to likes of the Daily Mail, which has always been nothing more than headline grabbing sensationalism... A stain on British journalism
That headline cunningly quotes the Tories saying they are Two Lame Ducks. In which case finding a Tory to simply make shit up about the £ is hardly a stretch.
Problem is that casual news followers pick up headlines and tone from online posts and tv/radio bulletins, skimming over facts and lacking balance. With my OH it's quite tiring to undo the poor work of our current media. I work in a fairly political environment. Friends and colleagues say similar
BBC thinks it has a constitutional duty to reflect what’s on the front pages of the papers its staff would otherwise not read. It doesn’t have to but it does.
It's for this reason I'm seriously thinking of stopping my licence fee. There is a lot I like about the beeb but this incessant reporting about the news about the news is amplifying and creating issues as with platforming farage back in QT days.
I heard on BBC radio 5 , the musk comments about Jess Phillips described as fairly controversial ...I mean WTAF ! How can they have a mandatory licencing model and be so utterly morally spineless
I’m fed up with the Today programme amplifying newspapers that are campaigning rather than performing valuable journalism. I listen to the Today programme for the BBC coverage and insight that I value. I don’t want the programme to be led by the Mail or Telegraph.

And can the BBC grow up?!
Doesn't follow that boring policy will generally be good of course
