Labour's poll numbers dropped dramatically in the first few months of office but I'd note that being tied/slightly ahead after six months is basically normal. 1997 was unusual for Labour retaining its lead so long

Perhaps that's Starmer/Reeves voodoo: "we stuck to the Tories' spending plans last time, so we should this time too". But as you say, the fundamentals were better, partly because Ken Clarke had managed a small budget surplus (though that partly through the final death throes of privatisation).

Polling is great months out from an election. To me at least, polling at this point is almost meaningless, no? Easy to say you're going to vote Reform or Green this far out, but what about when it actually comes to putting a cross in the box? We do live in strange times, however...

It's still interesting that nobody's getting convincingly above a quarter of the support, and that the second party isn't benefitting from the difficulties of the first.

Too early to conclude anything though. As they say, there's only one opinion poll that matters.
