According to the last estimate from Imperial College of London, more than 200K American kids had lost a primary or secondary caregiver to COVID.

What lessons does it teach kids that their safety was made into a political football and their caregiver’s and teacher’s lives were treated as fodder amid a deadly pandemic?

After failed advocacy for safe return (air filters, ventilation, optimize outdoors, stay home when sick, respirators), I knew it was futile when they rolled out the same line they do for other preventable tragedies we fail to address. “Tell kids that school is safe.” I can’t believe we accept this.

Not just our government, many parents didn’t care then and they care less now. They medicate before school and hope we don’t call. They can take time off for a day at the amusement park, but not when their kids are sick.

Had a student come sick to class all last week. Found out yesterday they were hospitalized over the weekend with the flu. They’re coming with RSV, Norovirus, Covid. Parents medicate and cross their fingers we don’t call. Nurse saw 56 students in one day last week.

Don’t get me started on Covid parents. Complained when we were online, why aren’t they doing physical work. Complained when we gave packets, why aren’t they working online. Don’t get me started on the whole potty training issue, that’s NEVER been my job.
