I made a three sisters stew (squash, corn, beans) which was excellent once I doubled the spices in the recipe. We also opened a slab of touristy Alaskan smoked salmon which we were given as a gift. Some of our guests seemed to enjoy it, but I thought it was awful.
I tried a Swedish beet salad that I will add to the annual julbord but my rice pudding was a disappointment because I couldn’t find my grandma’s recipe.
Good: An omelette I made yesterday stuffed with tomatoes, onions and cheese.
Bad: Khao Soi Chicken I ordered that tasted like they'd added 200g of castor sugar.
surprisingly good: hoppin' john made w turkey sausage. surprisingly bad: last minute "Shaq-a-Roni" x-large pizza--usually better...perhaps tired or undertrained holiday staff
Surprisingly good were these for a snack/appetizer (instead of 2 c cheddar, I used 1/2 c parm & 1&1/2c cheddar). Everyone agreed they tasted like bite-size Red Lobster biscuits w/pepper jelly on them
I made soup out of all of the leftover vegetables (honey roasted carrots, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes) cream and turkey stock and it was fabulous. Bad thing was some Brussels sprouts that must’ve frozen in the middle. Ruined the flavour and texture.
I keep on trying to make them, but I guess I just don't do them right. Also, I've moved on to other things. I think the way for me is to mix it in with a salad, but I don't eat salads often.
The vintage champagne we had was incredibly delicious. I was kinda hoping it wouldn’t be obviously so much better than our usual, but it really was. My parents were saving the bottle for their anniversary but my dad died this fall, so we celebrated his memory.
Surprisingly good? I made osso buco and it came out perfect and satisfied my overwhelming craving. Surprisingly bad? All I can really think of is the bottle of Bourgeuil that was served with it.
A horrible spiral baked ham. I never buy this cut, as I score and make my own glaze. Too sweet, to weirdly spiced, too big. I have lots of leftovers. It was not a hit. And I bought Pillsbury Crescent rolls, which seemed good in my childhood were terrible. Just out of hospital, I cheated. Pie bought!
Cooked, surprisingly good: gluhwein using oranges from a friend’s backyard
Cooked, surprisingly bad: schnitzel sandwiches (Dutch crunch is too dense)
Ate, surprisingly bad: hainanese chicken rice from a small east bay (SF) suburb
Ate, surprisingly good: ribs from a bbq joint in downtown Napa
Little balls of goat cheese rolled into crushed craisins & pecans. My first try of the craisin/pecan mix in my Cuisinart was so mushy I couldn’t use it but I turned into the most delicious filling for my first ever Rugelach!
The ginger cheesecake cookies from the NYT's cookie week recipes sounded good, looked good, but turned out so badly my entire batch went in the trash. On the other hand, the NYT's halloumi-stuffed sweet peppers, made by a friend as an appetizer, were sublime.
For Christmas, I asked everyone to gift me fancy food and wine—the kind I’d never splurge on myself. I was hoping to prove it’s all just pretentious nonsense and a waste of money. Spoiler: it was absolutely delicious. Now I’m going broke.😫
The most surprisingly good thing was a Mexican Christmas Jello that my son's partner made for me. It was delicious and both the dog and cat will attest to that.
I made scarpaccia for an appetizer, and despite seasoning it well, it tasted bland. I crumbled it all up and added a whole whack of ingredients to make a stuffing, and it was a hit.
Comments
*replaced water w/orange juice
*added orange peel zest
*added a LOT of fresh cranberries
*made it as a loaf
To my shock, it actually worked!
It tasted like cran/orange, not just cake batter!
That seems like a conspiracy to me, but I'll bet dried sweeted cranberries would work, too.
Surprisingly bad, found out I didn't actually like candied ginger.
Bad: Khao Soi Chicken I ordered that tasted like they'd added 200g of castor sugar.
Never had it
It was fabulous
Buckeye bars 👍
There is a persimmon and pomegranate salad with fresh mint, and it paired surprisingly well with the kale salad.
I don't remember eating anything bad!
They're now being blended with potato soup in some kind of rescue mission lol
But I would say my husband's mango sorbet and sparkling wine + other stuff cocktail thingy was remarkably good.

The surprise was how much the squeezing of lime juice at the end added so much brightness!

Worst was using blue hubbard squash for pies. Large. Tasteless pies.
Undercooked churros without dark chocolate underwhelmed.
Both made by my dad.
Don't worry. He's never even heard of Bluesky
