The second amendment protected "arms" (armaments/armories) of states government militia way back when there were state government militia for states to protect themselves.

This is why Milley commencement speech to graduating cadets emphasized that their oath is to the constitution and not to a would be dictator. It’s going to get ugly no matter how we slice it, but I pray we have a good contingent of military leaders and enlisted who will step up to protect us.
