My only issue with itchio is that the vast majority of games I try on there are just God awful.

Yeah the Kitty Horrorshow games may disappoint you. But they're great works of art, if you like horror stuff you should check them out for sure. Towards Greener Grass is also horror but not as much. It's 1-3 hours long and just good gameplay, I'd recommend to anyone.

itchio is cool and all but by no means an alternative to steam. Steam just has so many games (and I in my library) that I theoretically wouldn't need to buy any games for like the next 10 years. Who cares that the next AC f. e. only launches on epic. Just chill a year and wait for it to get fixed.

Steam allows tons of Windows games to run on Linux without a single second spent on making it work. Just plug-and-play.

It doesn't really make sense for me to buy games from publishers who hate me on platforms who hate me. Steam solves that issue.

I wouldn't ask for this but it is easier to get games on a steam deck through steam. But a lot of games wouldn't make sense there anyway.

I guess there's also a mobile storefront but that seems incredibly niche.

Yeah, it makes no sense, in fact, going through Itchio would be more valuable for any consumer given you download the whole launcher, no steam to authenticate every time launched, but steam is right there unlike Itchio. going to Itchio's site or anywhere else is clearly too much work for some 😞

it’s like an object permanence thing. i’m more likely to continue playing a game if i see it in the list with all the others. plus even if you manually shortcut it you won’t see news or patches about it

plus if a game has its own launcher or is part of something like epic i will not play it

Itch is great - in theory. But UI is decades out of date and "search", may as well be using Aramaic. Every feature request by the community is met with "Yeah, we can't be bothered to fix that". Good concept, poor storefront.

A lot of it comes down to momentum.
Steam libraries accumulate. Steam's had time to create and generate a lot of features (see: mod workshop, play together, Linux support) that other storefronts lack. Add on that there's still the stupid fucking "Epic Games vs Steam" subset of the culture war-

Steam does have it's benefits like remote play together and cloud save and invite friends to games pretty easily. Plus there is SOME (a small bit) of verification what you are downloading isn't just straight up malware. Some people just stick with what's familiar after getting so used to it.

From someone who only recently started browsing games on itchio, I was completely unaware that was the place for indie games. I was always Steam or GoG. But a friend shared a game and told me where to get it and sure enough, it was on itchio. I bet many just don't know.
