Probably the worst full drama series field prior to whatever happens this year would be 1992: late northern exposure, late quantum leap, very late LA Law, early law & order. And even this isn’t a terrible group.

Season 6 of L.A. LAW has its merits -- it's post-David E., but John Spencer, Cecil Hoffman, and (sigh) Larry Drake all have nice arcs, plus a truly goofy/fun guest star appearance by Kevin Spacey (of not-so-blessed-memory-otherwise). And there's a lot of dreck, too.
There were years that mid-run seasons of "Magnum" were nominated for Drama Series. Even if everything else in the category was outstanding, that's hard to withstand.
Sure. That’s even earlier. I was just responding to your suggestion that this was the worst since a little before the Sopranos. Most of the 90s nominations were really good.
Going back a little further, I’d say that you’re right about 1984, the Magnum year, being pretty weak. Early St Elsewhere, Fame, etc. Also? Browsing through 80s and 90s, I was surprised to see that Beauty and the Beast got nominated here two years in a row.
Have you watched Northern Exposure recently? The show was light years ahead of its time, wonderfully acted. It holds up to any of the “great shows” of this era. In fact, some of the most talked about Soprano episodes steal from NX
