Everyone is psyched about the Severance S2 trailer. But it's been 27 years since the 1st season and I don't remember a goddamn thing that happened & don't really feel like rewatching a whole season of a show so I can watch the 2nd. Nothing against Severance; this is true of half the streaming shows.

When Wheel Of Time season 2 dropped, we put it on and had no idea what was going on. We made it through the whole episode before we realized that Amazon had shown us episode 3 instead of episode 1.

We're just so used to being confused when a new season starts that we just went with it.

This length of hiatus is an increasing issue for TV, but I've found that when the previous season of a show is particularly great and/or unusual, the details stick for me for much longer than when it's just a solidly-crafted version of a familiar thing. 2/2

You must recognize your role & depth of engagement with shows. Yes, you remember the details/plots - it's your job, but most of us put shows on in the midst of doing dishes, checking kid's homework, or on the verge of going to sleep. We aren't following at the same level as you are.

TV shows (unless they're half hour sitcoms) aren't designed to be watched that way, so if you find yourself confused about key plot details because you were washing dishes, that's kind of a you problem man

TV used to be designed this way, and in fact for people to miss entire episodes, and it was not a bad thing. It's why some prestige shows are not more widely popular, especially if they require reading subtitles. TV used to be a "lean back" (vs "lean forward") medium.

I like this reply and deeply wish it were true, but sadly, many shows are designed (by the networks-- and usually to the creators' great frustration) to be "second screen" shows.

I highly recommend it! There's so much detail! And if you do remember some of what happened, it's actually really fun to watch again because you notice things that you didn't catch the first time around.

It would be interesting to see the stats of how many of these multi-year hiatus shows had a room, or changed showrunners. Or if it’s a universal seasonal development hell because they aren’t beholden to broadcast schedules.

Season 1 of Severance recap: the guy from Parks and Rec works for the mom from Boyhood on the set of THX 1138 and they have cookie parties while listening to disco on Desmond Hume's turntable and someone kidnaps a baby and I think Christopher Walken's there? Oh and there's definitely an elevator.

Silo S2 came out and I got about 20 minutes into the first episode and realized had absolutely no idea what was going on, and didn't recognize half the people on my screen (and no recollection whatsoever that Common was in S1). I have to rewatch the entire first season now to follow it.

Can we normalize "Previously, on..." recaps for streaming shows? Those were really helpful for me, especially when shows would bring back a character/reference an event from several seasons prior.

I always found NCIS a bit of a nightmare for that, they'd bring someone back or reference someone who'd appeared seven seasons ago. It was difficult enough when you'd seen it from the start, it must have been impossible if you'd picked it up partway through.

I rewatched the S1 finale directly before starting the Season 2 screeners, because I felt like I needed to get back in that “2020 headspace” as it were. It was the right call.

I remember a little while ago Ben Stiller asking on social media if anyone thought any shows had handled “last season on…” recaps well, so I’m hopeful he’s working on one of those for when the show airs.
