Did you think it failed due to a lack of audience in the VR space, or something else?

I'm certainly no expert, as I don't know this game/the VR space well as a whole tbh, but my uneducated take is there's a lack of audience in the VR space. VR hardware sells pretty well, but it's treated a bit like a Wii - a cool gimmick-y thing - and then very little software pick-up, imo.

Pretty much what I was thinking too. On one hand I do feel like VR could lend itself a decent mmo and provide a super fun experience, but on the other hand yeah, it's a bit of a gimmick gaming device with a small dedicated continuous playerbase

VR is more appealing to a casual audience and uncomfortable in long play sessions. Both are counterintuitive to what an MMO needs to thrive.
