I believe in people power & until these systems absolutely crumble in their entirety, I think we need a multitude of tactics. I don’t expect much at this point but that doesn’t mean we don’t continue to tell our stories & try.

You want to understand why I became a filmmaker - because I wanted to show the world how beautiful & brilliant we are. The truth is Native women are tied so intimately to the land & land rape & theft has always been the target of the Colonizer. We are protectors of the Sacred. Pls remember this.

From early depictions in media (dime novels to Disney) of Native women have been devalued, over sexualized, and characterized as one dimensional objects without power or agency over our own bodies. This infiltrated into government policies that stole our children and forced sterilization upon us.

As an Alaska Native girl I experienced sexual assault from the age of 8. Sadly, my story is far from unique. When I was 11, a white man in Anchorage felt comfortable enough to tell me he’d pay me for sex. Unless you are a survivor of such things it’s hard to express the damage it does to the spirit.
