I personally love deckbuilders so I was already biased towards Ruina but for why it's my favorite I feel that Ruina just has a far more crazy amount of breadth when it comes to synergies when you have 10 different gimmick floors and hundreds of cards to work with
which I find synergies start up faster in your average roguelike deckbuilder but idk I don't think I can feel the variety Ruina has in games like StS and Balatro
i think a lot of deckbuilders fail to stay compelling if you're not 100% locked on to the actual deckbuilding components? like. a lot of them go for a roguelite gameplay loop that works if you like that, but ruina being a fairly linear narrative game gives it a level of structure i deeply appreciate
to me, roguelikes/roguelites are anathema to an enjoyable deckbuilder with solid mechanics so the way to make them good is to just. remove the rogue bit.
as someone who did hop on the slay the spire train for a while, i still have to say that like. i agree, i want to see more deckbuilder games that dont fall back on that sort of progression system
If you want to find games like Library of Ruina or Marvel Midnight Suns, just do not look for *deckbuilders*, because that means specifically what you do not like: that improving your deck is the focus and the fun part, and you will do that every time, rather than just growing a collection of cards.
Most deckbuilders are roguelikes, which tends to be the part I don't like in the deckbuilding formula.
Ruina actually lets you build the deck you want rather than what RNG gives you.
