Why is it again that we're supposedly 'hysterical fangirls' but those male rock fans were 'cool and passionate'? Why is it that rock stars were having an 'important impact' on their fans and 'inspiring a generation', but BTS are 'cringe' and have 'manufactured parasocial relationships' with ARMY?

The truth is that everybody has parasocial relationships of some kind, nobody is 'above' them. If you've ever engaged with a piece of art and felt some kind of human connection to the person who made it, then congratulations, that's a parasocial relationship.

It's important to be careful how you regulate your parasocial relationships, but there's a lot of good that can come from them! In my opinion it's better to be self-aware, and use the positive aspects of parasocial relationships intentionally, rather than fooling yourself that you don't have any.

Through connecting with BTS and ARMY I've learned a lot about myself, found new ways of relating to people, pushed outside my comfort zone, challenged my assumptions, seen the power of collective action first hand, learned about community dynamics & strategy, and been inspired to create my own art.

Most of all BTS and ARMY brought a lot of joy into my life, and inspired me to keep going when times are hard. So when I see an image of artist and audience connecting like this, putting their hands together across the divide to create something that requires co-operation, it has a deeper meaning.
