David Maslanka’s percussion work is top tier. He was brilliant, and he created a linear experience for repertoire that is often vertically focused. There was soul and craft, and he was an absolute master. The ending of (and build up to) the third movement of Montana Music is so powerful.

Bands - Blink 182, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica - these three bands are experts at pacing the development of a song (some albums more than others obviously). Blink does things within a fairly narrow genre overall, but things unfold naturally and maintain momentum.

RHCP uses all four instruments to maintain interest and profession, and when Metallica is at the top of their game they craft a song that is one for the ages. And oddly enough, Eiffel 65 manages to create some really great lead lines, all within a very narrow stylistic zone.

Along the way, every piece I played in middle and high school band greatly affected me - I would hear new sounds and new harmonies, little motivic fragments, and absorb them. Newcastle March by Johnnie Vinson was an early one for me.

So many orchestral and chamber composers along the way. Bartok’s first string quartet and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring were two works that early on unlocked things for me. Two scores that I studied early in my collegiate career, that consistently teach me to this day.
