This Saturday April 5! Day of Protest in DC and around the country! Turn out! show up! Hands Off! 50501 movement! Women’s March! Third Act! Move On! Find a protest near you and let’s all defend democracy!!!!
For everybody who keeps going on and on about a strike, please make sure you vote too. Because your poster and chant will not change nearly as much as coloring in those circles on ballots.
I can't help but wonder how many people are out there who are investing at least an hour of their time to create a poster, drive to a protest site, and march...but couldn't invest 1 hour every 4 years to commute back-and-forth to their polling location, stand in line for 30 minutes, and vote.
It's unfortunate that so many people prefer the ease of same-day Amazon shipping, GrubHub deliveries, and Instacart for their groceries, but they don't see that filling in a bubble on a ballot is far-less effort than what they'll end up doing when the obviously-bad candidate becomes President.
Stand in line for 30 minutes? People at the polling place I was working at may have stood in line for 2-5 minutes. I hope you are not going around telling people these random numbers. Some of these are so inaccurate. Maybe that's the case in YOUR location though.
Last October, I did early voting (admittedly, on the last day of early voting) in Hamilton County, IN. I stood in line for just under 1 hour. However: wait times depend on population, availability of polling booths and - most importantly - participation. Hamilton County had 75% voter turnout.
1 hour is definitely the longest I've ever waited. During midterms, I stroll right in with, at most, 30 seconds of waiting.
But I'm proud of the 75% voter turnout in 2024. We tied with one other (much smaller) county for the highest participation rate in Indiana. Of course it can still be better.
I also just re-read my original message, and I could have written that better:
1 hour = 15 minutes to leave a house, drive to the polling location and park (x2, for the return trip) and then 30 minutes (at most...usually) of standing in line.
Gotcha. I do not think I have ever waited longer than a couple minutes to do early voting, but I do mail-in voting 95% of the time. I could've voted while being an Election Judge but wanted to get it done for potential crowds you described. Usually EJs look bored and it is crickets. ED is busier!
Not every four years. TWO YEARS. Midterms matter just as much. It also doesn't take an hour commute to vote. One of my polling places (and the one I was an Election Judge at) was two blocks away. Another was a 20-minute walk. So even the distance excuse doesn't work.
I apologize, yes, every 2 years. Midterms DO matter just as much.
My 1 hour calculation is a very extreme example (especially during the midterms), but I think we're on the same page: there's no excuse. It's practically no effort at all to vote - and much less effort than protesting.
It's a common fascist tactic to co-opt language with subversive intention. Nazis did it, IDF & zionists are doing it, and the burger-reich is trying to do it.
Why isn't anyone being held accountable for the recent breach of national security? If I violated HIPAA I'd lose my license and be subject to all kinds of legal trouble! How are they somehow LESS accountable than our entire medical community? Lower standards?
Cartoons are great however actually doing something meaningful better. Go talk some of your Republican friends into switching to Democrat or independent.

So 1 hour from home, to vote, to home again.
