The term "modern day slavery" falsely & needlessly implies that slavery is, for the most part, a thing of the past that the progressive, civilized world has more or less moved beyond.
In reality, slavery & slave trading—legalized or otherwise—never ended. It's changed, just like everything else.
The number of people who a) don't know or b) agree with the fact that slavery was explicitly kept around for prisoners in the 13th amendment is too damn high.
Let alone the debt peonage by proxy which is the lot of most people.
