Story time. 🧵

When I went to high school there was going to be a Neo-Nazi demonstration. I lived outside of town and decided not to go to the counter-protest, as I already knew many of my friends went. I regret this, as I would have loved to witness what happened with my own eyes.

As the Nazis started marching, firstly a woman of Polish descent walked up behind one of them and tried to hit him with his handbag. She sadly missed, but this awesome photograph was snapped by the moment.

The Nazis was then surrounded by counter-protestors and prevented from going where they were supposed to go. Nobody hurt them, or tried to (besides the lady) but the atmosphere was sufficiently angry that the Nazis got scared and started going towards the train station.

But since the crowd would follow them, this, according to my friends, turned into the Nazis running to the train station, and the crowd running after, and it ended up with the Nazis locking themselves into the toilet.

This event had a huge impact on Swedish politics.

Before this protest, neo-nazi groups in Sweden had been growing. But when national news showed what happened, the picture of the old lady with the handbag, and the supposedly tough nazis ending up hiding in a toilet, the image of Nazis as tough and counter-culture collapsed.

In Sweden, for decades after, neo-Nazis were seen as scared stupid kids. Which is exactly what they were.

The Nazis reformed, bought suits and tried to become adults. It succeeded, but it took decades. It delayed the alt-right movement in Sweden with at least 20 years. That's how to do it.
