I've realized, I'm a total deglazer when it comes to space marine competence. I will twist my mind into just about any scenario to say "yah nah the space dork gets nodiffed". (Playing rogue trader has *not* helped. Abelard can probably solo the entire ultramarine 3rd company)
They aren't though. But recognizing the difference between a caste system society and communism requires understanding real political systems, and the 40k setting.
It's sad they dropped the "They 'treat their subjects well'? What kind of magical mind control is this?" - running gag, where imperial authority is flabbergasted by their cunning trick of basic decency. It was still grimdark, by contrast, but it gave them a personality.
When space nazis cant comprehend space communists having power. (Oh wait nvm Tsu mind control other races rather than willingly work with them for the greater good.) Ugh
I like to imagine my chapter having a weird counter diplomacy tactic with the tau so they're always even. "Oh, you brought us medicine that our people desperately needed? Well we dropped on one of your planets to save it from orks. Why don't we join the tau? Why don't YOU join the imperium, huh?"

He tau are my hyper fixation so I know a lot
But in my heart they will be silly space communists
That's the Craftworld Eldar, not the Tau.
The funny space elves are also communists
