I'm guessing they were watching the higher plane that had just departed the north runway. My question is why was the helicopter flying south. If it was going from Fort Belvoir to the Airforce base along the river, that's a northerly route.

I want to know WHY and WHO authorized a military helicopter to fly into a designated and highly-controlled, highly-defined and very busy major airport approach corridor. For those that don’t know, DC airspace is the most controlled in America… for good reason.

So I’m not a Blackhawk pilot, never been in a helicopter, but it would seem to me that a multi-million dollar military aircraft would have some sort of radar, collision warning system, infrared sensors, etc., don’t ya think???

Planes move incredibly fast and its dark. One caller to MSNBC said he saw the plane in distress at about 300' up.

A military helicopter's equipment is different, it doesn't have all the safety stuff commercial planes do.

2/ As a pilot was telling MSNBCthe transponder collision avoidance measure usually talks out to warn pilots to go up or down, whatever is needed for an evasive manuver, but below 500' they go silent so the pilot and co-pilot won't be distracted when landing because landing takes all their attention.

Current Internet theory is that the helicopter IDed the wrong plane, so they were looking at the brighter plane, and that put the plane they ran into in their blind spot.

It feels like all media outlets got fed a "plane collided with helicopter" statement and went with it instead of looking at the friggin' video. The copter hit the plane. But the media all over seems to be saying the plane was at fault. I'm getting pissed - it's misleading.
