That's an often repeated "fact" going back to the 80s, but it's not true. There were technical reasons Sony pushed for their format, though press material boasted that the disk could hold an entire opera or the 9th which is probably how the story got started.

Prompted by the wife of Sony's vice president (it was her favourite piece of music)! Unfortunately, the U-Matic master tapes used to make CDs could still only hold 72 minutes of music, so Beethoven's 9th didn't fit onto a single disc until 1988.
