Ah Raymond, that was his name. If I knew it at the time (I hope I did) I'd long since forgotten. I remember Big Raymond as an absolute gent. I didn't know about the fake cracks in the ceiling!

Another thing that I didn't know. I would have known it as WJ Christie & Sons, although I probably just called it Chrisie's. I rarely drink in Edinburgh city centre these days, I only leave Leith if I have to!

I remember The Green Tree feeling like a local pub in the city centre. Once the novelty of The Pear Tree wore off I realised that The Green Tree was the better pub with 'tree' in its name!

Was in Bennetts Friday [Leith Thursday] In Bennetts it was SEVEN POUNDS for a pint of Neck Oil. I declined and had a Jarl for a fiver. Total bargain. Ha.

Beavertown were okay pre-Heineken, not so much these days. Their Bloody 'Ell blood orange beer used to be something to look forward to every year. £7 for a pint is ridiculous. Much better to support an independent brewery 🍻

Me too. I was semi-regular there and the manger used to let me skip the queue when it was busy. The Green Tree and The Doric (when there was still a bar upstairs) were my 'locals' in town. The Green Tree was demolished in 2002 apparently, around the time of the big Cowgate fire.

Strong look! This is me in the Green Tree beer garden, 7 May 1995, with a group of American student tourists I met that night. I'm still in touch with two of them and still have, and wear, that leather jacket.

I loved watching the world go by from the Doric. I was performing in a play in Adam House on Chambers Street on the night of the fire, we never got to perform the last act! Made for a memorable night though.
