Honestly as a BPDer I don't have any strong feelings about saying a character looks like another character. Getting bent out of shape about it is just being an asshole, fullstop. You don't have to LOVE it, but you don't have to treat it like an accusation of theft, either. - ThreadSky

Unless it's actually an accusation, it doesn't need to be treated as one.

I kinda wish we as artists didn't always put our pride about it first. In marketing, instantly getting the attention from completely left field would be a good thing lol.

But also...I don't think it's a real brag to say "I am wholy unfamiliar and completely uninspired by (Popular Media) (Known Artist) (Specific Technique to a Craft)" it just...sounds ignorant.

Not that I expect everyone to just KNOW ALL ART, but you should at least be able to understand that a significant figure might have subconsciously influenced you, or even been a conscious influence for one of *your* influences. I mean like, we are all working with the same base materials.

There are only ever gonna be so many physical atoms that make up substances that construct to your art material which in and of it's self has a limited capacity for how you can render the works from it: there is, in fact, a finite number of ways you can mark the paper. Even finer still:

The amount of ways to mark the paper to render an image that is recognizable as a bird has a Knowable number (it's just unknown).

This isn't to say that you can't get to the same end with a wide variation of *how* the bird is rendered. Just that you will, inevitably, make a mark someone else did.

Yeah I get it, the gut reaction to not being the first to ever have a cool thought and to have gotten there without any outside input of what that thought "should" look like feels embarrassing and icky and you want to yell and scream and claw at the offensive comments' face. But it in what it is.
