I find it a bit weird that the article mentions grime but totally ignores most other genres beyond pop

Surely most candidates for musical geniuses from the last 30+ years would be in the various genres of hip hop?

(Feels like the article was written focusing on pop and then added grime as an afterthought...which then opens up an entirely different discussion)

The change in how music spreads is interesting. Both me and my teenage kids never listen to the radio anymore. For me this means I hear very little new music unless I actively try...

Originality is not always good at all, and I'd say a big part of what makes Wilson & McCartney great is picking up other ideas and doing incredible things with them (McCartney is pretty clearly influenced by Motown, Wilson was obsessed with certain songs - famously "Shortenin' Bread").

Agree… if you take the 20 years from 1964-1984, the genres, movements, technologies, influences, etc, evolved so rapidly that there was something new every year or so. Now? Lots of good music but not much you can’t immediately relate back to a forebear.
