“Ruder” implies intent.
I agree that there are more behaviours that adults are perceiving as rude - we need to be open w/ students about the impact & also look for causes of behaviours. Sometimes it’s lack of awareness, desensitization to impact of behaviours, rather than intentional “rudeness”.

This rings true in my experience since the pandemic. I think there was a lot of lost learning of social skills. Combined with cell phones everywhere and kids spending less time with real people in social groups, kids are missing out on these important skills.

/2 They are less regulated in front of adults rather than doing it outside the scanning range of teachers. It seems like a filter has come off. Perhaps the % that were already disregulated are just more extreme.

I told students over and over that rude and cruel is not funny - they think it is. Having raised two children through the 00s/10s, I blamed Family Channel. A lot of teen discourse is a sense of humour in some ways. It is also a TikTok effect - immediate and vocal judgement with almost no context. /1
