There were characterised in my mind by poor direction, some great actors and just really wooden acting and terrible lines. Atrocious films. But some folks love them.

I've always felt a lot of it has to do with all of the dead air in the scenes. It's like all of the characters are just waiting for their turn to talk instead of having conversations. It's more prevalent in II and III. A combo of Lucas's directing of actors and everything being green screen.

Even in the early 2000s, which could be a wasteland of terrible CGI spectacle films, they stood out in their singular weirdness. So much thematic ambition! So much weird undercutting of your own story! So much toyetic mess planted right alongside straight-faced philosophizing.

Weirdly it makes me think of a bad Shakespeare adaptation. Like the story already existed in a good for but we are seeing a distorted copy
