If you’re white and thinking about boycotts and who is funding what, but you’re still in the family group chat with a bunch of racists……..start locally as they say.

Group chats are garbage for those “you’re so close to getting it” conversations too. I’ve been connecting to older relatives whose racism comes from ignorance. They’ve only been willing to really listen while in a private chat. BUT when they finally get it, they’re eager to learn (in my per. exp.)
Even micro aggressions? Most of my family live in a very white region so they’ll say something they think is a positive statement but it betrays how few POC they actually know. A relative might make comment about a hairstyle without understanding how hair was weaponized by white people, etc.
Yes, even micro aggressions. I grew up in a white area and plenty of people managed not to pull that shit. The ones who did, shockingly, were also racist. You can accept it or not but there’s not grace in my mentions.
I’m not trying to be argumentative and I hope I’m not coming across that way. I’ve debated a lot with the “is it better to cut ties & isolate someone or is it better to try to teach them” since an isolated racist is an easy mark for radicalization but they might be willing to listen to family.
Agreed. I hoped my fam would galvanise. That we’d be more like the Clan system in Scotland, & actually try to help each other, & maybe others if we could gather the resources. All but a few of them are shite. It’s a wilful lack of awareness, & belief in propaganda of either the blue or red flavour.

To their detriment.
