IMLS gave out $266.7 million in grants last year. They help support myriad library services, particularly in rural and underprivileged libraries (like HBCUs). IMLS also only makes up 0.005% of the federal budget. Anyone claiming they're saving the government money or making things more efficient by cutting IMLS is lying through their teeth.

Libraries will not be able to make up those grant loses. They will have to cut services or even close buildings. Which is exactly what the right wants. Why bother with banning books or passing anti-librarian legislation when you could just close the libraries or privatize them and own the companies.

This is going to affect small and rural libraries more than bigger city libraries, too.
I plan to keep loading up the little free libraries in my area with banned and books from marginalized authors but the loss of other services from libraries will be felt, too.
I hate it here.

My library is looking to take over providing services for our rural neighbors. We also are providing free tax forms because our local IRS office closed. We are providing navigators to seniors to help them sign up for Social Security now that it is functionally all online. It's a lot.
