Tarantino is kinda saying we should miss the ambience, when really it should have all been made more accessible in a way that was fair years ago. You’re right, it’s the reason the industry is contracting; but claiming the experience is worth it seems privileged.
I think he’s just complaining that movies aren’t given long theatrical runs and instead are made available on streaming (an inferior medium) way too soon. He’s an artist and he wants to protect the medium. He doesn’t set ticket prices lol.
He’s been in the industry over 30 years doing press junkets and interviews. If you ever read or listen to them then I think his passion for the art form becomes rather self evident.
I went to see Pulp Fiction so many times the year it came out. Tarantino has always seemed like a douche in every interview in those 30 years lol. I’m waiting on my favorite authors to have this take on digital books, but it hasn’t happened yet.
