My mother always said that our family motto was "Always bring a book." The long form of the family motto included "... and a jacket."

Apropos of nothing except us both having just been reading through dinner, I am reminded of the waiter who once tried to lightly roast me and Sarah on vacation for reading through dinner by asking "what did you do before smartphones" and we replied in unison "carried a lot of books"
