We’d still have to fight to make them accessible for everyone. They weren’t always tolerable, or easy to afford, but thanks to the tireless work of activists, advocates, and scientists we had these life saving medications.

Now with PEP, PrEP, treatment as prevention U=U, we’ve been able to prevent more new infections than we ever were able to with condoms, and we’ve made progress towards eliminating new HIV infections altogether. None of this has been without advocacy.

Millions of lives across the globe have been saved because of the early battles fought by ACT UP, and the Sisters of Perpetual indulgence, and other groups that advocated for queer lives in the 80s and 90s. Many more straight lives than queer.

Freezing funding to organizations like PEPFAR and Ryan white puts millions of lives at risk and is incomprehensible. It will result in drug resistance, complications, and catastrophic loss of life.

This administration appears hellbent on science denialism, which means they will be coming for our HIV meds, our PEP/PrEP, just the same way they’re coming for our trans siblings and their healthcare. They will come for all of our rights that they can next.

I was privileged to stand on the shoulders of giants who fought the hardest fights, they can’t do those fights again. It is our turn. This is Reagan again, this is lavender scare 2.0. We can’t allow it.
We have to be the giants.
