OPM is planning to fire all employees on probation (less than one year of employment). Agencies have until noon on Wednesday to submit a list of probationary employees to the OPM and indicate whether they wish to retain them—though it has been stated that this will not make a difference.

If this is true though, it means an absurdly large hit to the wildland fire agencies. It will likely hurt most in our middle tier of leadership. We will not have enough FMOs, Div Sups, Crew Sups, and such. 2/

It's like forcing an army to get rid of a disproportionate number of sergeants, lieutenants, and captains while expecting them to perform at historical levels. It's impossible. All it does is make it more likely more soldiers will die. 3/

Such is the case with wildland fire. Our culture demands a focus on safety & risk. We do that in several ways, but one is having strict rules about how many firefighters are assigned to a supervisor. We call it "span of control" & usually set it at 5, rarely more than 7. 4/

That culture is about to be thoroughly compromised.

Though I just made a military reference, we are not the military. We do not hold ground at any cost. We do our best to build strategies and tactics that limit the risk exposure of firefighters. We want everyone to go home. 5/

If you're in charge of a fire this summer and you see you do not have the needed leadership throughout the org, you're not going to put firefighters in bad places. You will choose to give ground. 6/

It's a Catch 22 though, because the more ground you give, the greater the odds of a fire getting larger and more complex, which increases your firefighting risk and the risk to communities. 7/

Private companies have the same probation period and sometime for a much longer period of time. It is not a reflection on the employee’s status or capability.

Feds are on probation for a full year and some positions up to three years. Most corporations are somewhere between 90-180 days. It's not the same.

No they are not the same, but there are similarities. I have seen and had 1 year probation periods in privately held companies.
