Need to watch it again to like, form an actual opinion on it, but when I saw it some time ago there was definitely a point near the end where a lot of themes started making themselves clear. Art under a commodity system, the fragility of hierarchical power structures. Bit of anti-AI stuff in there.

I'm so conflicted with a lot of Hayao Miyazaki films. I walked out of that film feeling the same way.

To me his films are too artsy to understand for a casual baby viewer like myself, but Disney films are too corporate for me to really enjoy

If they mixed I think it would be amazing!

It's Miyazaki looking back on his life, sources of inspiration, and the art he has created as well as the drive to create that art. Very beautiful, moving film when understood through this lenses. I feel like the original title (How Do You Live) helps illustrate this better than the localized one.

watched it a couple of times now, once on the big screen by myself and another time on netflix with justanotheruser :3

its rather abstract/emotionally driven(?) imo than plot/theme driven given the context behind its creators/production with what it ends up pretty clearly putting down near the end
