p.s. yup, major genetic bottleneck (and founder effect) there. At least racehorses have three different foundation sires -- and breeders still have to keep track of bloodlines, to try to stave off inbreeding depression.

I keep remembering the Red Dwarf episode where one (very obnoxious) character colonizes a planet with clones of himself. He even edits out his Y-chromosome to make genetically-modified women, if I recall. Here's hoping Elon doesn't get any ideas from that.
