I've been feeling very discouraged from pursuing personal art after the way the last few months have played out. REALLY fighting the idea that commission work is the only thing i should stick to

I follow your work with the main focus on your OCs, you have a very solid and characteristic illustration technique that makes anyone see your work and say "this guy did it" and that is incredible.
But I don't know if you work with just the "illustration" result or have ever made any type of authorial material/product with it. An old professor of mine said that illustration serves as a key to generating new ideas and solutions that go beyond drawing,
and I think you are perfectly capable of creating something (product) that meets a solution and demand with your OCs, of course there would have to be audience research, cost and investment analysis, among other things,
but I feel that you could do something like that, your work is great and you have a very well-established audience, commission is certainly not the only solution for what you do. Well, if I misunderstood the situation, I apologize and please ignore this message completely.😂
Seeing your OCs has been really fun, I read something since the wife wants to make more OC content, too. When making a creative change, it can take up to 2 years for the change you make to reach your target audience.
