No for real if my comic ever blows up I will have a secret account to post fanfic and if anyone ever says that I’ll reveal my true identity and shake them to their core LMAAOOO
Honestly I write stuff for my characters all the time, either AU stuff or canon things I don’t think would happen “on screen” during the main story. I don’t post it anywhere, it’s just for me! But I think you could post on ao3 if you wanted to :)
True, but it's a good writing exercise, though. Stick your characters in different situations to see what they do. You'll get a better idea of who they are and might even get a good story idea. That's what the opening scene of Reservoir Dogs feels like to me - a writing exercise made canon.
I thought about it for a bit and I think a word for fanfiction written by yourself about your OCS could either be called
Founderfiction - rolls off the tounge like fanfiction bc of the double f, or
Authorfiction - just imo sound less pretentious than calling yourself a founder
But what if its set in an alternate universe? Then its fiction because it doesn't follow the original canon and it is being written by someone who is a fan technically.
I have written fanfic that was almost entirely OC's with two fanfic characters that are just OC's with the names of the original characters, and then sat there staring at AO3, realizing that, yeah, it's not fanfiction. It's just fiction.
So many of my character's main personality traits started that way. I'm convinced they're writing themselves and just speak to me in prophetic dreams or something LOL
“I want my OCs to kiss and cuddle and bang, but… you know… so I have to change everything about the characters, world, motivations etc until it’s completely unrecognizable to its source material.”
This is so real and based. Writing an adventure fantasy is so hard when in my heart all I ever want to read and write is romance... all the silly romantic subplots will have to be explored on the side since there's just no room in the actual plot for as much of it as I want 😭
nah, fanfiction is a specific subgroup of fiction where I can play fast and loose with my characters (but then one time I wrote something as a joke and my friend told me it was one of the best things I wrote so 😂😭).
no fr bc why does the fanfiction author experience feel like "i love art!!! im a human being with a passion for creation!!!" but being an author fr is like, academic.
I've already made so many AUs. Flower shop/tattoo shop au. Role reversal au. Happy childhood au. Main character is dead au. It's basically just a multiverse now LMAO
my partner and i do this back and forth and call it fanfiction because we are fans of each others little guys..... and half of it becomes canon anyways 🤝

They need to get a win at some point and that sure as shit isn't happening in the main continuity.
Then I gave up cause I planned for way too much, way too soon.
Hopefully

Like when I get sad about a character's parent dying and write 5k about what it would be like if they hadn't
Either way, in my mind they are fully fleshed out characters with hopes and dreams and personalities.

“Whats the source material?”
“Ummmmmmm… oh.”
If it's not Canon then it's fanfiction.
It's just written by the same author
Put them with my favorite characters and make them kiss.
YOU ARE AN AUTHOR! YOUUUUUU ARE AN AUTHORRRRRR!
