Dismissing audiobooking as a form of reading because it's not text has got to be one of the most ableist takes I've seen today. So are you saying blind and physically disabled people who aren't able to use physical books AREN'T reading?

I've read somewhere that reading a book and listening to a book use the same parts of your brain. If that's really true, the there's no physical difference between reading and hearing either. It really is just ableism or elitism.
And also as an another perspective! My brain does not work in a way that comprehends audiobooks. I just cannot grasp/follow them. If I try to listen do you know how much pure focus and time it takes for me to just barely understand them??? Audiobooks are also a skill istg
No listen, when I audiobook, I have to be in a space where I can focus completely. And I can't have any background noise that interferes, so it's definitely a skill. I applaud those who can audiobook effortlessly.
Being pedantic about differentiating between how people read, whether it's through reading a physical book or listening to an audiobook tells me you don't consider or understand the nuances of what it means to make do when something that comes easy to you isn't possible for someone else.
The joy of reading means it can be consumed in ways that shouldn't be pigeonholed according to one definition. Let people enjoy books in whatever form they come.
I've recently devoured The Summer I Turned Pretty series on audiobooks and I can tell you that as a visually impaired girlie, reading those books would have taken me months. So glad you find so much joy in audiobooking.
This is one of the things that pisses me off the most, like HOW CAN YOU SAY IT'S NOT READING! It's reading! It's always reading, whether audiobook, physical book, digital book, braille, etc. I don't understand the arguments against audiobooks, I just can't. It's so ableist, it's so stupid! Urgh!!
Right? Way to dunk on people who are actually finding ways to read. We should be encouraging that, not pushing people away from the joy of reading in whatever form helps or makes them happy.
Exactly!! Reading in any form is a win and amazing! I love audiobooks, when I'm in a reading slump or swamped with uni, audiobooks are what rescue the day. Also, I love to fall asleep listening to my comfort podfics. Audiobooks have so many advantages, I don't know why people hate them!!
It drives me batty whenever I see this take. Like stop gatekeeping how people read. This attitude kind of reminds me of people who consider certain genres beneath them and therefore don't classify it as literature. 🙄🙄
YES. Like as long as people are reading!!! (Truly reading, the only thing I am willing to gatekeep reading from are the people who read for the word count)
