Letβs not go so far as to say that I crochet. I am learning to crochet again. I did it for a little while and then I started nursing school and got too busy and put it aside. And now Iβm trying to pick it back up again
πππ I actually learned in nursing school as a way to relax. I was having migraines due to stress. It didnβt work, but I picked up a new hobby.
Itβs certainly faster than knitting. I go back and forth between the two.
The crochet patterns are much cuter than they used to be, and granny squares have made a resurgence, so thereβs that! π§Ά
Crochet feels like writing cursive. Knitting feels more like printing. I prefer crochet, but I need to knit more for better skills. Both are useful, good, and necessary.
Love the analogy (crochet:cursive as knit:print). I tend to crochet when I want to go faster with a project.
One of the things that I like better about crocheting is the ripping out part. Ripping out knitting is a PITA! Putting the stitches back the right way without dropping or twisting. Ughhh
You can work them in as you knit or crochet, but it doesn't always conceal them well. (Thinking of projects using both dark & light colors.) Often I'm simply so engrossed in something else (like, tension of floats) that I just forget to try to knit in loose ends.
That is essentially what has happened! I bought crappy yarn (donβt know it was when I bought it) to learn to knit. When I went to buy different yarn for learning to knit I saw a decent set of crochet hooks & said, βFuck knitting!β ππ
I find that my hand cramps up really badly from crocheting, and I tend to make chains too tightly to easily start from them. Still learning, but one thing I do greatly prefer for knitting is easily being about to count stitches and get even tension
For me, the difference is I only have to really be coordinated with one hand while Iβm tensioning the yarn with the other. As to why knitterβs lose their shit about crocheted socks, I have no idea. π
I will never be a hooker. It just doesn't make any sense to me. My mil, otoh, is an absolute machine. It blows my mind how fast she can churn things out.
I am very right handed. It turns out that for me, knitting is fine. My left hand just holds one needle steady, and my right hand does all the work (English knitting)
Crochet is a bastard. Can't maintain the tension and yarn placement and hold the project all with my left hand
The easiest thing for me is counted cross-stitch. I made a Christmas stocking for my firstborn back in 1981 and it's still in great shape. I used to sew but only a little - a Halloween costume for my youngest, a nice tree skirt for my Christmas tree. I haven't tried crochet, though.
I enjoy counted Crosstitch also! When I was a kid, my mom had a friend who was so good at it that she would actually sell her artwork. Iβm not that good but I do enjoy it.
I'm actually thinking of picking it up again in a small way. My daughter has been stuck with my old Christmas stocking all of her life, and I still put trinkets in it for when she comes over on Christmas. But it's kind of not fair - she needs her own. So I'll do one for her, even tho she's grown.

There's still a whole lotta ugly in crochetville, but increasingly, you also see something really gorgeous or adorable.

Your mandala is so pretty! I love the almost 3D look. #crochet #knitting
The knitted piece below (my last big project) looks 2D in comparison.
What's the difference and why do knitters lose their collective shit about crocheted socks?
If you prefer crochet, but want to get a knit look, you can always expand to Tunisian crochet as well!

I did see someone holding the wool and the hook in their right hand - I think that would work fine for me if I could work out how.
But for now, I will do Bad Knitting TM (am a beginner)
